Change Your Major to Materials Science and Engineering
Sometimes students wish to change their major partway through their time at UC Davis. Here is a list of all the requirements you need to take change your major to materials science and engineering from any major in any college, including the College of Engineering.
For students who enrolled as first-years at UC Davis, you must have:
- Registered as a student and completed at least one quarter (minimum of 12 units) at UC Davis.
- Completed fewer than 135 cumulative units (excluding AP units).
- Received a letter grade for all courses that satisfy engineering degree requirements.
- Satisfied minimum progress requirements with good academic standing.
- Completed the five following courses: MAT 21A, B & C, PHY 9A and CHE 2A.
- A GPA of 2.000 or better and have received a C- or better in all completed engineering, math, physics, biology and chemistry courses required for your intended major.
For student who transferred to UC Davis, you must have*:
- Registered as a student and completed at least one quarter (minimum of 12 units) at UC Davis.
- Completed fewer than 135 cumulative units (excluding AP units).
- Received a letter grade for all courses that satisfy engineering degree requirements.
- Satisfied minimum progress requirements with good academic standing.
- Have completed all transfer admission coursework and GPA requirements for the intended major for the term originally admitted to UC Davis (Please see https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/transfer/major-requirements-college-engineering for required courses and technical GPA for your admission year and for your intended major). For students who have not completed all transfer admission requirements at their previous institution, they must earn a 2.0 GPA or higher in these remaining courses at UC Davis, and receive a C- or better in each of these courses.
- A GPA of 2.000 or better and have received a C- or better in all completed engineering courses taken at UC Davis that are required for your intended major.
- Completed, received a C- or better and maintained a 2.000 GPA or higher on all transfer admission course requirements for your intended major.
Please submit a Change of Major Form and an Academic Plan draft for the upcoming three quarters before making an appointment with an undergraduate program advisor. Here are the steps you need to take to submit an academic plan using the Online Advising Student Information System (OASIS):
- Go to students.ucdavis.edu.
- Click Forms & Petitions -> Submit a New Form -> Academic Plan.
- Enter draft plan for the next three quarters and click “Save as Draft.”
Please review the degree requirements for your intended major to find out which courses should be included in your plan, when those courses are offered and what prerequisites they have. The Change of Major Form is also available through OASIS.
*Note: Transfer change-of-major requirements are new as of fall 2017.
