Subhash Risbud receives Distinguished Engineering Educator Award

Blacutt-Underwood Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering Subhash Risbud received the Engineer's Council's 2019 Distinguished Educator award. The award is the Engineer’s Council’s highest honor in engineering education and leadership.

Distinguished Engineering Educators are engineers with a top reputation in education, mentoring and leadership in the discipline. Honorees show successful involvement in student learning, engagement and fulfillment in engineering and have made an impact on academic or industrial research in engineering design or theory.

Risbud received his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai before coming to the U.S. for graduate school. He earned his M.S. in materials science and engineering and his Ph.D. in materials science, both from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on glasses and ceramics with the goal of developing new materials and processes for applications in optical, electronic and biotechnologies.

After beginning his career at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and the University of Arizona, Risbud joined UC Davis in 1990. He became vice-chair of the newly-formed Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in 1993 and served as chair from 1996-2002.

The Engineer’s Council award is not the first time Risbud has been recognized for engineering education. He received both the Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Engineering in 2005 and the UC Davis Academic Senate’s Distinguished Graduate/Professional Teaching Award in 2008. In 2009, he was named the first holder of the endowed Blacutt-Underwood Professorship in Materials Science for his excellence as a professor.

The Engineer’s Council, founded in 1955, hosts an annual honors and awards banquet in Universal City, CA to publicly honor exceptional engineering students and professionals, advance the discipline and better inform the public about engineering’s role in the world. Risbud received the award at the 2019 annual banquet on February 23.
